On Monday, I drove Betsey to the Vet before work where she could get a full examination as she evidently had a litter of puppies but, it was uncertain to as how long ago. That afternoon I received a phone call from the Vet asking if I knew where the puppies were and I said I had no idea that she was a stray that would show up but, not long enough to be caught or for someone to follow her. I was then told that I needed to find those puppies. It was a real stormy day and only getting worse. I went into my Boss and told him what was going on and he said GOOOOO!!!!! Just don’t get hit by lightening! I immediately left the office and drove to the vet to pick up Betsey which was 30 minutes in the opposite direction from where I picked her up. By the time I got to the vet, it was really pouring and I had never witnessed lightening like this before. One of the technicians lent me her rain coat and I proceeded to drive back to where Betsey was rescued.
Upon our arrival, I took Betsey out of the car and through the pouring rain let her lead me. We finally came to a house and Betsey led me right up to the front door. I rang the door bell but, there was no answer so I continued to ring the bell as I saw a light was on and a car was in the driveway. After about five minutes, a woman finally came to the door. Once the door opened, the woman just peered down at Betsey with a look of disgust. I asked her if this was her dog and all she did was mumble something. Betsey immediately went up to her and sat right down be side her, looking up at the woman with her brown eyes that seemed to say “It’s me, aren’t you happy to see me”? With that, I knew right then that the woman did not want anything to do with her so I said we’ll leave as I need to find her puppies.
The woman then said let me get my coat and we’ll follow her in the car. I told her that you can’t just follow her in the car she needs to be on a leash so that she could lead us to the puppies. While waiting for this basket case to get her coat, Betsey all of a sudden wanted to leave so I followed her lead and she took me to the back yard. The woman finally came outside as I was standing at a gate to the back yard getting ready to open it and the woman said “there is nothing in there” and I told her “your dog wants to go in there so I am going to let her in”! I let Betsey lead me to a shed and as I opened the door she bolted right inside. As the door became fully opened I was able to see inside and to my horror and disbelief, saw about seven to nine puppies squirming around on a cold, wet concrete floor with no bedding or towels to be seen and no food or water.
I told the woman that she found her puppies and the woman replied “those are not her puppies, they belong to her”. I gazed around the room and found yet another Collie. I was so angry and disgusted with what I saw and just learned that I rudely told the woman, “Now you don’t have to find homes for only these puppies but, now you have to find homes for her puppies. With still not knowing where Betsey’s puppies were, I just left and told Betsey "take me to your puppies sweetie". She led me three houses up and took me into a backyard yet to another shed. Betsey went around to the back of the shed and started crawling under it. I took the leash off of her so that she would not get it tangled on something and before you know it, she was under the shed feeding her pups. Unfortunately, this meant her rescue was not over. The woman finally appeared and spent all of five minutes and disappeared again.
I then went to the door of the owner and told him what was going on. He had informed me that he never saw this Collie before but, knew that she had a litter of puppies under his shed so he fed her and made sure there was fresh water for her but, also wanted them to be removed as quickly as possible. I told him that now that people know where she hid the puppies, she will want to move them and to please keep an eye on her as I lived so far away. I told him I would be back to take her and the puppies |
