Text Box: If ever a dog could be forgiven for ill-temper, it is Mardi. This young sable and white male was hideously abused before being abandoned to wander the streets. He arrived on our doorstep after a long journey from New Orleans, emaciated, timid and fearful of the world, but never once did he bare a tooth or move to hurt any of us. He’s a collie, after all, and collies are known for their intelligent and gentle temperaments.

True to his breed, Mardi (who came to us on Mardi Gras weekend ) went through all of the initial check-ups and treatments like a gentleman. In order to make him feel more at ease, I sat with him on the kitchen floor for hours and very gently groomed all of his mats away. Slowly Mardi realized I was here to help him.

Sometimes I think I can see a faint, haunting fear cross Mardi’s face when something reminds him of his past. But he seems to shake it off quickly. He looks around his new home here among our Meadowview Collies, and that bright, sweet optimism returns to his eye. It’s a daily reminder of why we do what we do here at Collie Rescue of Mississippi
